Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre partnered with HH Angus to address suspected underutilization of exam rooms and to track engagement level of patients and families with the goal of improving access to care. Through a privacy-conscious, real-time monitoring system, the project identified underutilized spaces, enabling improved scheduling and resource allocation. This initiative uncovered opportunities to reduce patient wait times, enhance staff access to critical spaces, and increase the availability of life-saving services. By optimizing space, Sunnybrook is strengthening its healthcare delivery, demonstrating how innovative engineering can create impactful and lasting community benefits.
By using innovative, non-invasive technology to assess space utilization, the project delivered valuable insights that enhance operational efficiency and inform future planning. Lessons learned—such as the importance of clear communication around sensor use—add further value, making this a compelling example of data-driven design in healthcare environments, as recognized by the jury.
