Years ahead of Toronto’s 2030 goals for sustainable design, the 10-storey Limberlost Place stands as a significant achievement. Designed by Moriyama Teshima Architects and Acton Ostry Architects for George Brown College, it holds the distinction of being Ontario's first tall timber net-zero carbon emission institutional building. Fast + Epp developed an innovative large-span beamless structural system for this 16,000 m2 exposed mass timber building that will house the Tall Wood Research Institute, School of Architectural Studies, School of Computer Technology, and childcare facilities. This project will continue to influence design and construction towards mass timber across the industry.
This groundbreaking project stood out for its bold structural innovation and environmental leadership. The jury recognized it as a transformative achievement that pushes the boundaries of tall wood construction. By changing local codes and fostering academic collaboration, it sets a new precedent for sustainable design and will inspire future generations of engineers and architects.
This project has won two additional awards, the ACEC Project of the Year Award and the Catalyst Award. Hear what the Jury Chair had to say about this project.
