The Nignen Women's Shelter, designed by EXP, is a safe haven for First Nations women, children, and 2SLGBTQ people escaping domestic violence. Located on the Natoaganeg (Eel Ground) First Nation, it’s the first live-in facility of its kind in New Brunswick. It provides 12 living units and support spaces for Mi’kmaw and Wolastoqiyik communities and other First Nations. The shelter’s design honours First Nations culture by creating spaces where individuals feel connected to their heritage while receiving services to enhance their quality of life. The shelter underscores the idea that when individuals are connected to what matters most, they are empowered to heal, grow, and thrive.
Recognized by the jury for its deep community impact, this project redefines how women’s shelters can serve and empower. Its open, visible presence challenges stigma, while meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities ensures continuing cultural relevance. Despite budget and logistical constraints, the project delivered a replicable, resilient model with lasting social value and a strong sense of place.
This project has won an additional award, the Engineering a Better Canada Award. Hear what the Jury Chair had to say about this project.
